What is CBD?
A chemical compound in the cannabis plant known as a cannabidiol (CBD), is changing the health industry as we know it. Unlike CBD from its cannabis cousin, marijuana, CBD derived from hemp is a federally legal compound and a popular supplement for fitness enthusiasts and athletes because it poses a ton of health benefits without getting you high.
Where does CBD come from?
CBD is extracted mainly from the flower and leaves of Cannabis Sativa L. Hemp and marijuana, which are both part of the Cannabis family and share many characteristics, including CBD. But unlike marijuana, hemp contains a negligible amount of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive chemical found in cannabis. To that end, hemp serves completely different (and legal) applications that include consumer, industrial, and more recently, medical use.
Heaps of potential health benefits
In 2013, a CNN documentary that featured the use of CBD products as epilepsy treatment in children decreased misconceptions about hemp and increased the attention on its health benefits. Nowadays, hemp-derived CBD oil and oil-infused products have earned their place in the wellness world. These help recreational and pro-athletes and the general public alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, ease stress and anxiety, and sleep better at night.
Cannabidiol also helps restore balance to the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is responsible for regulating our physiological and cognitive functions such as stress, appetite, pain-sensation, mood, memory, and immune system response.
While cannabinoids can also be produced naturally by our bodies, cannabidiol that binds to our cannabinoid receptors are known to boost our ECS, keeping it on track and bringing great benefits to the way we feel, move, and react.
No psychoactive effects
There’s no need to watch Cheech & Chong and Pineapple Express because it’s not possible to get high from CBD. THC as mentioned earlier, is the compound responsible for marijuana’s psychoactive (and infamous) effects. While marijuana can contain up to 30% THC, hemp is cultivated to only contain a maximum THC level of 0.3%, making it virtually impossible to feel any high. It’s safe, non-addictive, and helps you feel amazing without the paranoia and giggles.
Completely legal in 50 US states
Because hemp-derived CBD does not contain psychoactive properties, its form in supplements, tinctures, sprays, edibles, and other products is legal in 50 states. Unfortunately, marijuana-derived CBD and its products’ legality depends on factors decided by each state. But if you find yourself in the state of Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, you can enjoy marijuana and hemp for both recreational and medicinal use without prescription.
